Cengage Learning Manager, Software Engineering in Farmington Hills, Michigan


Working in a highly collaborative, cross-functional Agile environment, the Engineering Manager owns all aspects of delivery for the Student and Instructor dashboard. This is a greenfield project aimed at providing a unified experience for students and instructors, letting instructors create and rollout courses and letting students register for courses course registration and creation as well as meaningful information exchange between students and their instructors. This is a full stack solution that helps students locate, purchase, launch and engage with Cengage courses while also servicing high volumes of rapid-fire service-level requests that originate from a wide variety of consuming platforms. Working closely with our Commerce, Marketing and CRM teams the Engineering Manager leads initiatives that help drive revenue and revenue recognition. This role is deeply technical, requiring a mixture of architectural savviness, operational expertise in a cloud setting as well as the ability to mark and communicate plans, manage risks and deliver to schedule.

  • Pairing up with your architects and tech leads you propose and drive design decisions, look for opportunities to improve your platform so that it remains technically current, and continue to service-level customers that require backward compatibility

  • Although coding is not a key duty or responsibility, you are not afraid to code, will support the rigor behind code reviews and will participate in them


  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience

  • Proven success in a leadership role with responsibility for delivery of software development projects within either a technology services or software product company

  • Knowledge of and desire to manage and lead in an Agile development environment

  • Minimum 10 years software development experience including 5 years of combined Java and/or JavaScript programming experience

  • Experience building enterprise ready and cloud enabled web applications leveraging frameworks such as Spring Cloud and angular.js

  • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture in an enterprise environment

  • Experience with Apache Cassandra and Oracle RDS

  • Experience maintaining multiple CI pipelines each targeted at different test and certification environments

  • Experience with monitoring and alerting best practices, leveraging tools such as OpsGenie, Pathview, Logic Monitor and AppNeta

  • Experience with load testing and performance tuning using JMeter, Gatling or other frameworks

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Travel may be required (10%)


  • Advanced degree preferred;

  • Experience managing off-shore teams
