Cengage Learning Learning Engineer in Boston, Massachusetts
The Learning Experience Design (LX) team at Cengage sits in our Learning Center of Excellence and works with our Global Product Organization to infuse proven learning science and instructional design methodology into product development. This team is responsible for helping our product organization create solutions that facilitate effective, efficient learner experiences. The Learning Engineer works holistically throughout the product development cycle, ensuring that clear learning objectives and assessment strategies are put in place on the front end of development, allowing for ongoing curation and efficacy analysis once a product is launched. The team creates and disseminates best practices around learning science, conducts training, and governs aspects of the instructional quality of our product. All of this work is done in collaboration with multiple teams across the organization to drive, test and validate the educational impact we make with our learning products.
This is a high-visibility position requiring an individual with vision, passion, and the presence to work with executives within Cengage Learning, and cross-functional teams. You must have a “can-do” attitude and be able to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and possess excellent analytical skills.
Establish and maintain standards around the quality of Learning Objectives and Assessment items across Cengage Learning, this may include the development of and review of objectives and assessments
Establish and maintain documentation library for best practices in Instructional Design and Learning Science
Establish training curriculum and train colleagues on best practices as they pertain to learning science theory and instructional design
Serve as a learning science domain expert on key initiatives, working closely with a cross-functional team to drive development of innovative solutions for higher education.
Work with analytics and taxonomy teams to build frameworks and processes around how learner interaction/usage data can inform future design and present digestible, actionable recommendations to our product team
Build close relationships with the Cengage Product Team to ensure that good learning design practices are incorporated into and supported by our platforms and products
Master’s degree in instructional design, learning science, educational technology, instructional technology, or related experience
Experience with Design Thinking methodology and product development
Experience using data to inform design decisions
Advanced knowledge of instructional design processes, learning methods, theories, and best practices for classroom and online post-secondary and/or adult populations
Ability to recommend design improvements based on learning science
Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, and presentation skills
Success with writing and maintaining process and procedures
Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across functional groups
Ability to understand/assimilate customer needs and challenges, industry trends and market dynamics, learning science theory and translate them into actionable recommendations for product development
Demonstrated proficiency and understanding of commonly used tools for course development including various LMS, web editors, interactivity tools, multi-media platforms, basic HTML, etc.
Demonstrated interest in professional development in the areas of learning science, instructional design, digital product development, higher education
Research or experimentation experience, particularly as it relates to learning science or instructional desig
Significant experience in assessment strategy development and design as well as measurement of learning efficacy
